Acne Triggers: What Is Causing My Acne?

Nasty breakouts. Horrible rash. Pimples. Small red bumps. Painful lesions under your skin. These are just some of the hideous symptoms we’ve all gone through in the past. Sadly some of us are still experiencing most of those, resulting in high levels of stress and frustration.

We know you’ve been looking to find out what is causing your acne and we have just the right information for you!

Acne is a term to describe these, and it occurs at any time in your lifetime. Majority of people happen to experience acne in their teenage years. However, it is common to have symptoms later or throughout life.

But have you ever wondered what exactly is triggering your acne? Or maybe you have been desperately trying to understand the causes of your acne?

Well, various factors might be causing your acne. Nevertheless, five main groups can be distinguished as the core contributors to acne.

  1. Stress
  2. Hormones
  3. Gut Health
  4. Pore Clogging Ingredients
  5. Food

Stress & Acne

First of all, let’s talk STRESS. No matter whether your day to day life consists of working full time or not, juggling loads of tasks, children, studies or anything else, the element of stress is impossible to avoid.

However, have you ever wondered how much impact stress might be having on your skin?

Studies by various researchers including Stanford University have shown that there is a direct link between mental and emotional pressure (a.k.a. Stress) and your skin health.

In fact, the stressful periods are linked to sebum which is a waxy substance that eventually clogs the pores. Therefore, the more stress you experience, the more acne prone your skin might be.

Hormonal Acne Causes

Second and one of the most talked about acne triggers is HORMONES. As you can imagine, this one might be difficult to control if you don’t know that it is causing your acne. Although the human body’s primary function is to balance the hormones which keep the core functions running smooth and well, it is not always the case.

Hormonal acne often appears because of the connection between testosterone (although primarily male hormone, also produced by females), androgen receptors in the skin and sensitivity to it.
Essentially, hormonal acne might be more difficult to understand, but it can indeed be treated.

Here, at Natural Acne Clinic we help to battle and provide professional hormonal acne treatment, so get in touch with one of our expert Clear Skin Specialists if you’ve been trying to tackle this one by yourself.

Gut Health & Acne

The third acne trigger we need to discuss is GUT HEALTH. While you may think ‘how do I know if my gut is healthy’ we can tell you about that in no time!

Good gut health includes no bloating, gas, diarrhea or constipation. Don’t worry, and we’re not trying to invade your privacy here, gut health and bowel movements are closely related.

There are many causes for poor gut health: from being highly stressed to taking specific medication, from eating junk food to consuming too much Chardonnay.

Inflammation and excess of bacteria may drive the production of Acne-like pimples, therefore, understanding the bacteria and ecosystem of your gut is essential in getting acne-free.

Food & Acne

Last but not least important acne trigger is DIET AND NUTRITION. While we’ve all heard the famous phrase ‘you are what you eat,’ we have also seen the spots and pimples pop up after indulging in foods high in sugar. So, does it mean that sugar is the one to avoid?

Well, not necessarily! In fact, there might be certain foods or supplements which are your acne triggers because they contain specific nutrient or nutrients and vitamins which you may not tolerate as well as you may have thought.

Pore Clogging Ingredients

We already discussed things which sometimes we cannot control such as stress, or may not be aware of such as gut health. However, pore-clogging ingredients are one of the factors that can be controlled though may be more difficult.

These are usually elements and particles that clog the skin and make your skin more acne prone. Thinking about a list of the ingredients on each cream and makeup product you buy or pick up in the Drugstore, may be difficult even to understand or you may not know where to start.

  1. Hi Jessica,

I have suffered with acne since I was 14 and at the age of 20 I started taking Yasmin. I have been taking birth control for over 6 years now and my skin has cleared out. However, I still get pimples before my period. I want to get pregnat but I am concerned that I will get my acne back. Before going off birth control should I take Healthy Skin supplement along with EPA Omega-3 supplements? I would love to hear back from you.

    Thanks
